Renting a Yacht in the British Virgin Islands

Located in the Caribbean Sea, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British overseas territory that boasts many gorgeous reef-lined beaches. The BVI consists of four main islands – Tortola, Anegada, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke, as well as over 50 other smaller islands and islets. The sheer variety of islands to discover means that a yacht rental in the British Virgin Islands will be the ultimate nautical adventure! Visit a plethora of beaches and bays and revel in the exceptional beauty of the BVI from aboard your private boat.

How much does it cost to rent a yacht in the British Virgin Islands?

The price of a private BVI yacht rental is calculated on a number of factors. This includes but is not limited to the type of boat, the size of the vessel, the seasonality, and the duration of the trip. The following is a list of the average cost of a yacht rental in the BVI according to different boat types:

Sailboats

€2,760 per week in low season

€7,671 per week in high season

Motorboats

€1,700 per day throughout the year

Catamarans

€8,750 per week in low season

€17,040 per week in high season

Should you rent with or without a skipper?

It is possible to rent a yacht in the BVI without a skipper as long as the boat owner agrees and you have the appropriate boating license. This being said, there are many advantages to having a professional skipper onboard with you. For one, they will take care of all the manoeuvring such as sailing, docking, and anchoring the boat so you can take it easy and relax. Moreover, a skipper will be comfortable navigating the local waters and can take you to hidden locations that tourists don’t know about. All in all, deciding to hire a skipper is dependent on your preferences, but there are definite advantages to doing so.

The climate in the British Virgin Islands

The climate in the BVI is subtropical, meaning there is warm weather year-round and big seasonal changes in precipitation. The temperature ranges from 25 to 32 degrees Celsius from winter to summer. The best time to visit the archipelago is from December to April, as this is the dry season.

What to see in the British Virgin Islands

There are so many islands to visit, that it can be hard deciding what to do and where to go on your yacht rental to the BVI. Our suggestion is to take your yacht and go island hopping, so you can experience as much as possible! Out of the 60 islands, there are four main ones: Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.

Tortola is the largest of all the islands and home to the capital city Road Town. This island is perfect for experiencing all the cultural sites, as it has the most cosmopolitan feel out of the BVI.

Virgin Gorda is famous for the Baths, a natural phenomenon in which volcanic lava formed huge boulders 70 million years ago. Since then, the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea have filled up the gaps between them, resulting in natural pools! This is one of the BVI's top tourist attractions and a must-see.

If you’re a big fan of snorkelling or scuba diving, Anegada is the island for you. This island has 63 kilometres of coral reefs filled with tropical marine life. If this is your style, you can head to Horseshoe Reef or Flamingo Pond to experience the best the island has to offer.

The smallest of the four main islands, Jost Van Dyke, is the most secluded of them all. This is the island visitors go to when they want peace and quiet, away from the busy beaches and crowded restaurants. While you may just want to go around the island on your yacht rental looking for whatever you prefer, we recommend heading to Cinnamon Bay or Bubbly Pool for azure waters and silky sands.

Nearby destinations

If you want to experience other island groups on your boating holiday, consider travelling to nearby destinations! The BVI is perfectly situated in the Caribbean, so you can take your yacht rental outside of the island state! For example, you can travel to larger islands such as Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic. Here, you’ll experience some of the best beaches and a lot of activities. Alternatively, you can head south to other smaller islands such as St Lucia or Barbados. Either way, the Caribbean has an abundance of beauty, so are certain to be impressed.
