Description of Alexandre's sailboat
Sailboat - 23m — Sangermani - Laurent-Giles
Alcor II is a large racing-cruising yacht designed by the Englishman Jack Laurent-Giles and built in Italy by the Sangermani shipyard for a Spanish owner. Jack Laurent-Giles (for many innovations and in particular for the progress he has made in terms of optimising sailing and motor performance. The Sangermani shipyard was founded at the end of the 19th century. It has the rare distinction of having only ever built pleasure yachts (no workboats), individually (no series). Alcor is the largest of the fifteen yachts produced by this architect-shipyard duo. On Alcor, the search for performance is demonstrated by the very fine hull, the 28 m large mast, the 240 m² of sail area, the 17-ton ballast, the significant draft of 3.2 m and the impressive coffee grinder on the aft deck: these are characteristics of a racing boat. And the search for comfort is reflected in the very welcoming deck saloon, the five cabins each equipped with their own washbasin, the two large toilets, one of which is equipped with a real bathtub, and finally by the very powerful Rolls-Royce engine (320 horsepower) which allows a cruising speed of 9 knots. Alcor has undergone almost no modifications since its construction: the interior fittings are entirely intact and the engine, the windlass and the electric genoa furler, all three original, still work. An intact testimony to the talents of the architect and the shipyard, Alcor thus offers a leap back 60 years in the history of yachting.
